Ray’s story

Created by Cheryl 9 months ago

Ray/Dad was diagnosed with cancer in February 2023 and after having a PET scan it was confirmed he had oesophagus cancer, he had two tumours and it had grown into the muscle and was in one lymph node.  Sadly he was not a candidate for surgery due to his lung capacity and this was the same for radio theropy, he could have had some chemotherapy but it wasn’t likely to make much difference to him.
Ray decided that he would rather have quality rather than quantity so this was the road he went down and was put under the Palliative Care Team at The Isabelle Hospice.  Ray completely accepted his diagnoses with calm and bravery and this helped his wife Phyllis and daughters Cheryl & Trudy accept his illness too.  Ray was assigned a nurse from the Isabel Hospice Care at Home Team Her name was Allison and she was an amazing person and we will forever be grateful for the support she gave dad and the whole family.  His wish was to stay at home and live out his last days being close to his family.  Ray asked for the local Reverand Dr Sarah to come and visit as he wanted to organise his funeral he was very brave.

Sadly Ray didn’t get his wish to stay at home but had to be admitted to the inpatient unit to get his pain under control and keep him hydrated.  He did say after a couple of days that he was happy to be there and had made the right decision.  The staff and volunteers at the Hospice were amazing to dad and all of his family, we spent the last week of his life with him and we are so grateful that this was made possible from the lovely staff.

Ray sadly passed away on 11th June 2023 with Phyllis, Cheryl & Trudy by his side.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, children , grandchildren & son-in-laws and the rest of his family ❤️
